So what’s this new anime series everybody’s been freaking out about today?
Well it turns out that Studio Trigger just announced their first full-length series! It’s called KILL LA KILL and is apparently about a rivalry between two girls in a post-apocalyptic high school inspired by the Tower of Bablyon. The girls have school uniforms that apparently confer powers beyond humanity unto them. Basically it’s the kind of insane premise you’d expect from a studio like Trigger, whose previous series include the infamous web serial Inferno Cop and the charming OVA Little Witch Acedemia. From what I understand, the grand majority of Trigger happens to be composed of former employees of legendary studio Gainax, who emigrated from the studio a while back. That means that there is likely a serious amount of talent involved in this production.
What does it matter though? All this is bunk if they don’t have somebody worth his shit supervising the production.
As it turns out, Hiroyuki Imaishi (also known as the director of Gurren Lagann and Panty and Stocking) is directing this thing. He’s a super talented animator who’s worked on many of Gainax’s best series, so KILL LA KILL should be in pretty good hands.
But doesn’t Imaishi…uh…go off the deep end when he’s left do to his own thing? Remember the hot springs episode of Gurren Lagann? Or most of Panty and Stocking? Or the entirety of Dead Lea
Yeah, I was worried about this too. But apparently Kazuki Nakashima (the playwright responsible for Gurren Lagann, Kamen Rider Fourze and what eventually became Oh! Edo Rocket) is the chief writer for this project as well! Gurren Lagann is easily the most grounded script Imaishi’s worked with (for what that’s worth) so I think we’re in pretty good hands here.
So is there anything we should even be worried about in the first place?
The guy who did the character designs for Gurren Lagann is designing for this project too. So yeah, I think this could be pretty special.
TL;DR: I doubt this is going to be anything profound, but Gurren Lagann x FLCL x Utena sounds pretty enticing, not gonna lie
